What's the country's wealthiest man to do with an extra $80 million lying around?
Build his own "smart city," of course. Microsoft Corp.
cofounder Bill Gates and his investment firm Belmont Partners have invested $80 million to jump-start development of a smart community in Arizona.
Gates bought about 25,000 acres of land in the state's West Valley, about 45 minutes west of downtown Phoenix, Belmont Partners told local media, according to KPNX. The proposed community will be called Belmont.
"Belmont will create a forward-thinking community with a communication and infrastructure spine that embraces cutting-edge technology, designed around high-speed digital networks, data centers, new manufacturing technologies and distribution models, autonomous vehicles and autonomous logistics hubs," Belmont Partners said in a news release.
Belmont Partners said 3,800 acres will be devoted to office, commercial and retail space. About 470 acres will be used for public schools, and most of the rest of the land will be used for as many as 80,000 residential units. It's not yet clear when construction will begin.
"Comparable in square miles and projected population to Tempe, Arizona, Belmont will transform a raw, blank slate into a purpose-built edge city built around a flexible infrastructure model," Belmont Partners said.
What Should You Look For In A Satellite Internet Provider Posted on February 11, 2014, 10:25 pm By admin Satellite Internet providers can be categorized based on the download capacity and speed, customer service and the overall customer experience. The following are some of the prolific internet providers used all over the world: Download Speed Satellite Internet service can vary greatly in speed. Some go barely 5Mbps, while others are as fast as 15 Mbps. In fact the same company can even deliver both speeds because some tie speed to the price of your plan. Data Plan The data plan you choose dictates how much data you can download per month. You can get as little as 5GB per month up to 30 GB per month. You should also be on the look out for companies that offer unlimited free data access overnight. Especially if you or another web user in your house is a night owl, this can save you greatly on the cost of your plan. Quality Service Check out the reputation of the co
Anonymous' New Walkie Talkies Use Radio Waves to Access the Internet The hacktivist group Anonymous is working on a new communication tool to circumvent censorship and set information free, and it’s going low-tech this time. The project is called Airchat, and it will use radio waves instead of wifi, broadband, or phone lines to communicate data and messages between computers. It’s basically pirate radio for ones and zeros. The idea for Airchat was hatched because of the “lessons learned in the Egyptian, Libyan and Syrian revolutions, but also from the experience of Occupy Wall Street and Plaza del Sol,” explains the project description on Github , posted under “Lulz Labs,” which was spotted by International Business Times . With social upheaval in Ukraine and Venezuela and other places around the world, a safe anonymous way for dissidents to organize movements and share information is as relevant as ever. The radio communication works much like a walkie-talkie or CB rad
A new Internet communications system for space has been tested for the second time, paving the way for faster extraterrestrial communication. (Photo : NASA) An Internet Wi-Fi system for the moon is significantly faster than home connections here on Earth. The Lunar Laser Communication Demonstration (LLCD) uses lasers to send Internet service around 239,000 miles from the Earth hto our lunar companion. Investigators were able to upload data at top speeds over 19 megabytes per second (Mbps), and download information at 600 Mbps. This would allow users on the lunar surface to copy more than 100 average songs every second. NASA uses radio waves to carry data to and from satellites, observatories and the International Space Station. As the need to transmit vast quantities of data becomes more common, this method of communication is less able to meet demands. Photographs and videos can already be transmitted on the test system, and developers are hoping to accommoda
